Preventive Services

Learn how gum disease can affect your daily life.

At the Center for Cosmetic Dentistry we often get asked by our patients Why do I need a cleaning every 3-6 months?

The reason is because our hygentists are thoroughly trained to detect and treat problems before you know a problem exists. Prevention! Thats the key and thats what we strive for at the Center for Cosmetic Dentistry.

Why is prevention so important?

Gum disease and periodontal disease is the #1 cause of tooth loss today! Anyone at any age is susceptible to gum disease. Routine and regular visits to the dentist is the best way of detecting and treating gum disease during the early stages. Gum disease will not go away by itself or with intense brushing. The only way to cure the disease is with professional cleanings that remove plaque under the gums.

What is gum disease and periodontal disease?

A dental disease that attacks the gums and bone. As the disease progresses bone literally disolves away from the tooth causing the teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. Once you have had gum disease you will always be susceptible to recurring problems so it is very important that you continue to visit the dentist on a regular basis.

Here are some signs of gum disease. If you notice any of the following signs please call and make an appointment with a hygentist immediately.

  • Bleeding gums during/after you brush
  • Red, swollen, puffy or tender gums
  • Persistant bad breath
  • Loose or several loose teeth
  • Puss between your teeth

Gum and periodontal disease has been linked to:

  • Infective endocarditis: A potentially fatal disease in which the inner lining of the heart becomes inflamed.
  • Diabetes: Studies have shown that diabetics with gum disease were three times more likely to have heart attacks than those without gum disease.
  • Spontaneous pre-term births: Women with gum disease are 7-8 times more likely to give birth prematurely to low birth-weight babies. Researchers believe that the low-grade infection causes damaged cells to release inflammation causing substances that have been linked with pre-term births.
  • Lung Infections: This specifiacally happens to people with chronic lung disease.
  • A weakened immune system: It takes longer than usual to heal wounds.

If you think that you might have gum disease or periodontal disease please email or call one of our specially trained hygienists to schedule an appointment (608.238.2300.)

What can I expect at my hygiene appointment?

At your hygiene appointment, one of our specially trained hygieinsts will examine and assess your current dental condition. In determining your current dental condition we will review:

  • Your current medical history
  • Understand your concerns and values
  • Conduct a head,neck and cancer exam
  • View and analyze current x-rays
  • Examine gums and bone structures for peridontal disease
  • Examine teeth for cavities

Once we have completed the assessment we are then able to determine what type of cleaning is necesary for your mouth. Yes, there are different types of cleanings that the hygentist and dentist will recommend for you based on your current dental condition.
