5/25/09 A Genetic Link Between Periodontitis and Heart Attack was revealed for the first time at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics.  For years, it was believed that this link existed, but is was proven for the first time by Dr. Arne Schaefer, of the Institute for Clinical Moleculaar Biology, at the University of Kiel, in Germany.  Dr. Schaefer told the conference, “Because of its association with coronary heart disease, we think that periodontitis should be taken very seriously by dentists and diagnosed and treated as early as possible.  Coronary heart disease, Dr. Schaefer said, is the leading cause of death worldwide, and approximately 90% of all people over age 60, the target group for CHD, suffer from periodontitis.  This link, an abnormality of DNA, indicates, as has other research, that treating periodontal disease can contribute to a positive outcome in CHD, and suggests strongly that reversal of coronary issues can help resolve periodontal disease.
         
5/13/09 The Oral Systemic Approach, and the epidemic of gum disease,  is described in “Gum Disease Is Killing Our Patients (And Our Profession Is  About to Be Busted,” in Dentaltown Magazine, one of the best trade journals of the dental profession.  The article, by Dr. Kammer, is critical of those dentists who still live in the past, believing that their responsibility to  patients does not include the patient’s overall health.  These doctors leave  the periodontitis crisis to dental hygienists, and are not nearly as involved in systemic health as they should be.  Dr. Kammer makes it clear that periodontal disease, which affects approximately 80% of all people, is undeniably linked, and is  in all probability a causal or contributory factor, to a host of conditions and  diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s  disease, and pre-term birth.  It even plays a role in obesity, premature wrinkling, and erectile  dysfunction, among some people.
