As we age, numerous changes take place in our bodies that affect our
mouth leading to an increased risk for decay and periodontal disease.
Years of wear and tear can result in discolored, cracked teeth or a need
for dentures. The good news is that many of these changes can be
prevented. Here are four simple tips that can help you maintain a
healthy mouth and a youthful smile.
1. Brush & floss. The easiest way to prevent tooth decay is one you
already know. It’s true for five-year-olds, and it’s true for
50-year-olds—you need to brush your teeth twice daily and floss once a
day. You also need to brush for at least two minutes in order to
effectively fight bacteria. Hold your brush at an angle and use small
circular motions.
2. See a dentist at least twice a year. It is imperative to keep your
prescribed dental appointments so your dentist can spot any problems
before they become serious. Your dental appointments are also key to
your overall health. Research shows that treating gum disease helps
control blood sugars for diabetics and lowers your risk for a heart
attack or stroke.
3. Fight back. You don’t have to accept all the changes that aging often
brings. Bone grafts can often help replace bone lost to gum disease.
Medications, rinses and gum can all be used to stimulate decreased
saliva flow. Receding gums can be covered with tooth colored fillings or
new tissue can be grafted into place.
4. It’s never too late to improve your smile. Often a few small changes
can make a big difference in the appearance of your smile and the
function of your teeth. Old restorations can be replaced with new,
metal-free restorations. Worn teeth can be restored with crowns or
veneers. Implants can be used to replace missing teeth as well as
stabilize loose dentures. Crooked, crowded teeth can be straightened
comfortably with numerous options.
With just a little effort and careful maintenance, you can achieve the
best smile you’ve ever had – at any age.
